New pedestrian lighting on trial at crossing

In an effort to improve safety in a pedestrian hot spot at the northern end of our main street, new LED pedestrian lighting has been installed and is now operating.

The installation, in the form of flashing pedestrian signage, is located at the crossing outside the Broadway Hotel in Clarinda

Street.

It's part of a 12-month trial aimed at improving vehicle and pedestrian interactions and provides more warning of pedestrians to drivers.

Parkes Shire Council’s acting project engineer Liam Willoughby said the trial has come about after safety concerns were raised by nearby residents and businesses about drivers not seeing pedestrians on the crossing.

It was also brought to Parkes' Traffic Committee and Cr Ken McGrath has been a strong advocate for something to be done in the area.

The flashing lights are activated by detecting pedestrian movement and also feature a manual button, ensuring the lights only flash when required.

"This is what is called non-standard traffic treatment which means it doesn't flash all the time," Mr Willoughby said.

The public is welcome to provide feedback on the pedestrian lighting during its trial period and can do so by contacting Council on 6861 2333 or email council@parkes.nsw.gov.au.

After the trial Mr Willoughby said they'll interact with the community, businesses and the Traffic Committee, and see what their next steps will be and if it will be permanent.
