Wisdom leads way on Australia Day

Parkes Bowls

By MARTY TIGHE

Championship matches

In the Major Pairs match played last week Guy Ellery, as a substitute for Joe Davies, led for Skipper Tony Riordan against Brett Frame and Mick Went.

Guy and Tony started the match well to lead by 4 shots after 9 ends, leading by 9 shots to 5.

Unfortunately, they were only able to win just 4 more ends.

Brett and Mick found their form after a sluggish start and were too good, as they finished over the top of Guy and Tony. Brett and Mick won the match by 19 shots to 13.

Australia Day bowls

Thirty-six Bowlers enjoyed the Clubs’ traditional Australia Day Triples bowls carnival on Sunday.

The carnival was again generously sponsored by Parkes Services Club. Bowlers and carnival organisers recognise the generosity and support of our club and bowls that is always provided by the great team and the management at the fabulous Parkes Services Club.

Bowlers also appreciated the presence of our Australia Day ambassador for Parkes Shire Mr Tasman Cassim, together with Tim Keith who each joined in with bowlers to congratulate all bowlers and winners on the day.

The winners on the day were Dave Reilly, Maureen Miller and Cherie Frame.

Runners-up were Colin Hayward, Ron Hornery and John Corcoran who, between them, would have nearly 200 years combined bowls experience!

The generosity of prize money from the Parkes Services Club also extended to the Round Winners of Dave Parker, Rodney Ford and Lyn Ryan, also Shane Hodge, Sam and Annie Teague who are regular supporters of Australia Day bowls.

A report on bowls wouldn’t be complete without mentioning Ian Simpson, Steve Ryan and Tony Riordan who were also chuffed to be on the dias. A great day enjoyed by all, despite the heat.

Thursday social bowls

Warm humid conditions greeted 18 social bowlers last Thursday who played 3 games of pairs and 1 game of triples.

Ron Hornery and Ian Simpson had a close win over Geoff Smith and Bruce Orr, winning by 17 shots to 15.

Ron and Ian scored 5 shots on the 4th end to lead by 7 shots and continued to bowl well together, to lead by 14 shots to 6 after 11 ends.

Geoff and Bruce won 7 of the remaining ends to close to margin to just 2 shots after the final end.

Ron and Ian were pleased to pack their bowls away, feeling pleased the game finished when it did.

Ron and Ian won by 17 shots 15 over the fast-finishing pair of Geoff and Bruce.

A see-sawing scoring game was played between Marty Tighe and Tony Riordan against Colin Hayward and Warren Bevan.

Colin and Warren matched Marty and Tony, shot for shot until the 2 old heads combined nicely to win 3 consecutive ends and establish a 3 shot lead after the 14th end.

Marty and Tony then scored 6 shots, followed by 3 shots on the 15th and 16th ends, lifting their spirits to enjoy a handy 5 shot lead.

Colin and Warren won 4 shots on the next 2 ends, to take the lead again by 19 shots to 18, with 2 ends to bowl.

Marty and Tony won the final 2 ends, to win the game by 22 shots to 19, over Colin and Warren.

The triples game featured some of the most experienced bowlers in the club when Jim Blake, Graham Davis and Colin Mudie took on the formidable trio of Noel Johnstone, John Ward and John Corcoran.

Corky, as he is affectionately known, who ages like red wine, and similarly is bowling better with age, led his team well as they went end for end against an in-form big Jim Blake, ‘Popeye’ Davis and Colin ‘I don’t need a hearing aid to bowl’ Mudie.

After a tight tussle, team Mudie won by 20 shots to 17, courtesy of winning 5 consecutive ends in the second half of the game.

The score in the pairs game between Ethan Lacey and Gary McPhee who played against John Carr and Brian ‘show me the money!’

Townsend on rink 13 is now irrelevant.

Post game, this rink was drawn as the Lucky Rink to select number 7 in the Lucky Rink competition.

Young Ethan, despite being on the losing team in the game, successfully drew the lucky number 7, and won the $270 Lucky Rink draw. Gary, Brian and John were quickly Ethans’ new best friends, as they shared the spoils. For the record, John and Brian defeated Ethan and Gary by 22 shots to 15.

Saturday social bowls

Sixteen social Bowlers escaped the air-conditioning at home to sweat through 2 games of triples and 1 pairs game.

John Ward, Col Woods and Col Miller proved too strong when it mattered the most, against Rob Lacey, Bob Freeman and Tony Riordan, winning by 22 shots to 17.

Despite leading by 2 shots after the 17th end, team Riordan were over-run by the fast-finishing trio of Ward, Woods and Miller who won each of the remaining ends. John, and the 2 Cols’ won by 22 shots to 17 over team Riordan.

Joanne Simpson, John Carr and John ‘P&O’ Wright were too strong for Jim Blake, Dave Parker and Colin Mudie, winning by 26 shots to 17.

The game was as good as over by the 12th end when team Wright led by 14 shots to 5.

Team Mudie staged a mini- comeback over the second half of the game, but were soundly defeated by team Wright.

Mike Valentine and Gary McPhee enjoyed a comfortable roll and win over Ethan Lacey and Mick Simpson, winning by 26 shots to 11.

Ethan and Mick tried hard all game, but winning only 5 ends for the whole game was never going to end well.

The lucky rink draw for $100 was not won, and now sits at $110 next Thursday.

Social bowls are played each Thursday and Saturday at 1pm, names in by 12.30pm and, as always, the ‘friendly club’ welcomes all visitors to play social bowls. Ladies bowls are played on Tuesday.

Friday raffles and members draw are held from 7pm. The members draw jackpot is now $1500.
